TRAVEL WITHOUT MAPS: RETHINKING CAREER CHOICE IN A WORLD OF CHANGE JOHN LEES
Best-selling careers author John Lees outlines a number of ways of rethinking traditional ideas of career choice. John will outline his Career Awareness model for planning our working lives, and will also look at the psychological barriers we place between ourselves and career enhancement. Just as companies need to rebrand and re-invent themselves to survive, the 21st century workplace demands new kinds of thinking and a move away from passive career models.
Johns presentation explores how changes to the world of work impact on our idea of a career and will ask what kind of career mindset is emerging. This is a lively, ideas-packed presentation which will have a powerful influence on the way you manage your own career or enable you to help others to do the same.
John Lees is one of the UKs best known career strategists. Former Chief Executive of the UKs Institute of Employment Consultants and a Fellow of the CIPD, he is the author of How To Get A Job Youll Love (McGraw-Hill), continually in the top 5 UK careers titles since its first publication in 2001. He is also author of Take Control of Your Career plus Job Interviews: Top Answers To Tough Questions and, new in 2010, Career Reboot. He writes and broadcasts widely (he was recently featured on BBC 2s Working Lunch), and has a regular careers column in People Management. His work has been featured in The Sunday Times and Coaching At Work.
Meet the expert sessions
These are designed to enable you to receive an overview of a topic area and importantly to enable you to ask your questions to a subject expert, in a small group environment.
The following sessions will run every 20 minutes from 6.10 pm until 7.30 pm and you can choose which to visit on the night.
Could I be an Interim Manager?
Jenny Simnett of People in Places has built a career as an interim HR manager and consultant. She has experience of both the private and public sectors in a variety of generalist, specialist and commercial HR roles for UK and global organisations.
Share her experience and learn about the opportunities this sector offers and importantly the entry requirements you have to meet and the barriers you must overcome. Check out whether this sector would work for you and gain insights into entry routes.
With an early career in sales and marketing management, product and project management, both in UK and overseas and an MBA and an MSc in Organisational Psychology, Jenny is well placed to help you consider every aspect of an interim career change.

Social media the current way to find your next role!
A recent survey suggested that 60% of job opportunities first surface via some form of social media and the trend is growing. Are you using this media in your job hunting and / or would like to find out more? This event will give you the opportunity to talk with Neil Perkin a leading UK expert and active blogger.
Neil runs a digital and media consultancy called Only Dead Fish, which specialises in advising clients on digital strategy and the application of social technologies to help their business. With fifteen years experience in the media industry, and formerly the Director of Marketing, Strategy and Digital at IPC Media, the largest consumer publisher in the UK, Neil was at the centre of defining and implementing digital strategy for one of the biggest media owners in the UK.

CV Review
Your CV is often the first point of contact between you and prospective recruiters and, as we know, first impressions always count. Is your CV supporting you or acting as a disincentive?
Bring your CV along and let someone with expertise in this area give you a view on both the first impression and its selling potential; 5 minutes that could be very worthwhile!Membership Information and Progression
Over the past year the Institute has reviewed the existing membership levels and criteria. As a result, changes are planned for 2010 to reflect the changing nature of the profession and those operating within it.
Branch members who have some knowledge of these changes will be available to attempt to answer your queries and provide guidance on how the new HR Profession Map, membership levels and qualifications interact.Creating the Right Image
Are you making the right impact as you walk through the door? You get just 30 seconds to make a lasting first impression. Whether consciously or sub-consciously people 'read into' the way we look and infer all kinds of things about us; our abilities, our lifestyle, our values etc.
Let Kerrie Ellis, Personal Stylist and Image Consultant with Colour Me Beautiful show you how to present yourself at your very best at all times.
Consultants - How your Branch can support you.
The Branch has a Special Interest Group and the Group Chair, Trevor Hills, will provide an insight into the purpose of this valuable Group, which aims to provide insights into how to develop your consultancy skills, improve your business and facilitate mutual support.
